Ryan Makin, B.S., Graduate Student

After trading the orchards of the Central Valley for the beaches of southern California, Ryan graduated from UC San Diego with a BS in Physiology & Neuroscience in 2016. He joined the Gelfand Lab first in 2016 as a Laboratory Specialist, then as a graduate student in 2018 in the Biomedical Sciences department. His research interests include the role of DICER1 in promoting pathological angiogenesis and miRNA-independent DICER1 processing. In his free time, he likes to hang with his cat, Fernando (named after the hit ABBA song) and is on a billiards team with the American Poolplayers Association.

Dionne Argyle, M.S., Graduate Student

Born and raised in the Bronx, NY, Dionne comes to the Gelfand Lab via Penn State University (B.S.-Biology/Genetics) and New York University (M.S.-Biology). Some of her past research includes investigating the role of syndecan receptors in HPV in the Menses Lab at Fordham University and understanding the role that APOBEC proteins play in the HIV. Currently, Dionne’s research is focused on understanding the off-target effects of bevacizumab and how they differ between males and females. Outside the lab, her interests include obstacle course racing, taekwondo, playing and watching sports, and traveling (especially to Canada).

Joe Olivieri, B.S., Graduate Student

Joe hails from San Diego, CA, where he earned a B.S. in Biology from San Diego State. He joined the Gelfand team in 2022 as a graduate student in the Biomedical Sciences program. His research interests are centered around the impact of spaceflight on human health, as he previously studied the effects of hypergravity on Drosophila melanogaster immunity. He aims to develop an understanding of ocular health that will accelerate progress in treating terrestrial pathologies and spaceflight-related vision changes. His lab research focuses on the effects of shear stress on choroidal endothelial cell health and function. His interests outside of science include playing football and collecting sports cards and historical relics.
